What To Do If You Don’t Feel Safe While Travelling

If you feel unsafe, overwhelmed, or unsure during your journey, follow these steps. You are not alone. You can get help.

1 Stop and Breathe

  • Pause.
  • Take slow breaths.
  • Give yourself time to think.
  • You do not need to rush.

2 Go Somewhere Safer

  • Go into a shop or café.
  • Go to a staffed station.
  • Stand near a driver or staff member.
  • Move to a bright, busy area.

3 Tell Someone

  • Call or message a trusted person.
  • Contact your college.
  • Use your emergency contact.
  • Share your location if you can.

4 If Talking Is Hard

  • Show a message on your phone.
  • Use the accessibility card.
  • Use voice-to-text.
  • Use short, simple sentences.

If your bus or train changes unexpectedly:

  • Stay where you feel safe.
  • Check for another route.
  • Tell someone about the change.
  • It is okay to stop your journey.

5 Trust Your Feelings

  • If something feels wrong, leave.
  • Change your route.
  • Wait somewhere safer.
  • Ask for help.
